Michael Joseph Jackson (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009), known as the "King of Pop", was an American musician and one of the most commercially successful entertainers of all time. His unique contributions to music and dance, along with a highly publicized personal life, made him a prominent figure in popular culture for four decades. His 1982 album Thriller remains the best-selling album of all time, with four others — Off the Wall (1979), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), and HIStory (1995) — among the best selling. He popularized several intricate dance moves, such as the robot and the moonwalk. He is widely credited with having transformed the music video from a promotional tool into an art form, with videos for his songs "Billie Jean", "Beat It" and "Thriller" making him the first African American artist to amass a strong crossover following on MTV, and has influenced scores of music artists. Twice inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, his other achievements feature multiple Guinness World Records — including the "Most Successful Entertainer of All Time" — 13 Grammy Awards, 17 number one singles (including the four as a member of the Jackson 5), and estimated sales between 350 million and 750 million records worldwide. He was also a notable philanthropist and humanitarian who donated and raised millions of dollars through support of 39 charities and his own Heal the World Foundation.

"Michael Jackson went into orbit and never came down. Though it ended way too soon, Michael's life was beautiful. Sure there was some sad times and maybe some questionable decisions on his part, but Michael Jackson accomplished everything he dreamed of. The more I think about Michael and talk about Michael the more I think that 'King of Pop' is not good enough. I think he is simply the greatest entertainer that ever lived."

“I think everyone here was a Michael Jackson fan. One of, probably if not the greatest entertainer that's ever lived. I think -- I know my entire generation was influenced by his music, and you know, just the entertainer and just the songs, we listened to them -- whatever. It was always happy. You always wanted to listen to his songs. And his legacy is one as the greatest entertainer, one, I think that his draw, his appeal and his influence and all the artists following him.

"Michael Jackson was a musical icon to so many people, including artists, and his career spanned over such a long period of time that it was a part of more than just one generation. It may be the end of his physical life, but the life of his music and dance will continue to be an important source of entertainment for generations to come. It is sad that there were so many haunting stories around his existence that have tarnished his reputation."

"No other artist in modern times had a greater impact on our culture and I don't think there's anyone who isn't feeling this right now. He set the highest standard, which inspired people to shoot for the sky. His presence will most definitely be missed and his legacy could never be forgotten. My prayers and thoughts go out to his family."

"I still remember being a kid watching Motown 25 with my family and losing my mind when he did the Moonwalk. Despite what he may have become in the end, pop music is what it is today because of him. There could be no Justin Timberlake, Omarion, Usher, Chris Brown, even Robbie Williams, without the music of Michael Jackson."

"I personally love Michael Jackson's music. He basically fronted the entire pop music industry. He took the classic rock style and added a hip-hop flavor, and started a whole new genre of music. The 'Thriller' video basically sent dance music videos soaring, not to mention how his style of dance influenced everyone in the world. He had his flaws, as we all do, but I have to give credit where credit is due, and I think he deserves as much musical credit as anyone else in his generation."

"I grew up with Michael Jackson as my idol. It was a family affair. We would all sit around the television whenever a new Michael Jackson video would premiere. I know the feeling I had when I saw him do the Moonwalk. I can only imagine the feeling they are getting in heaven seeing him walk through those gates."
